About Susan
Susan Wheeler experiences her life with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) and is the founding director of the Canadian Disability Resource Council, a non-for-profit organization.
Susan is no stranger to coping with the many implications of being different. This book was created from the inspiration of her true-to-life experiences growing up with an inherited progressive neuromuscular disease. All of the books characters with their unique personalities, the menagerie of animals and the examples of bullying that unfold in Aunt Scarlett’s Farm were created from Susan’s own life dramas and experiences. Just like Peggy, the books main character, Susan was forced to acknowledge the physical limitations presented to her; yet also learned to seize life’s opportunities in order to claim the fullness of her abilities in numerous other ways.
In 1987, Susan started her own publishing company, Sureen Publishing & Productions as a conduit for information and resource material on disability, health care, psychology, education and travel, and has authored seven books. She is also the receipent of numerous awards of distinction in recognition of her many contributions and achievements, including the Women of Distinction Award in 2001 and the Women-on-the-Move Award, in 1995.
Susan lives in a small quaint community in south-central Ontario with her partner and several pets.
